House & History

The property

The property was built in 1821 by Admiral Maitland, renowned for accepting the surrender of Napoleon Bonaparte aboard the Bellerophon. With the reward he received for capturing Napoleon and escorting him to the island of St Helena, Maitland financed the construction of this residence. Since then, three generations of the Maitland family lived at Lindores, followed by three generations of the Turcan family, who also grew up and made their home here. Over the years, the house has undergone several renovations and extensions, yet it still preserves some of its original features, such as the doors and fireplaces.

History

The property overlooks Lindores Loch, a stunning freshwater lake that was managed by monks in the 11th century under a royal decree from King David I of Scotland. This privilege led them to build a church in the area, known as Abdie Church, which now lies in ruins.

Known for Saint Andrews, one of Scotland’s smallest and most historically important towns, it is considered the “home of golf.”
